Apple TV is a strong IPTV device: it has a fast processor, Gigabit Ethernet on the 4K model, hardware decoding for every stream format we use, and a remote that works well with a guide. What it does not have is sideloading, so everything must come from the tvOS App Store. Fortunately three capable players are there. This guide compares IPTV Smarters, iPlayTV and GSE Smart IPTV on tvOS and walks through setup with WorldIPTV credentials.
Which Apple TV models work with IPTV?
Any Apple TV that runs the tvOS App Store — the Apple TV HD (2015) and every Apple TV 4K (2017, 2021, 2022) — can install these apps. The Apple TV 4K models are the ones to use for our 4K channels; the Apple TV HD is limited to 1080p output. If you have a choice, the Wi-Fi + Ethernet version of the Apple TV 4K is worth the small premium: a wired connection is the most reliable fix for buffering on any device.
The older third-generation Apple TV (2012) has no App Store and cannot run IPTV apps; the only option there is AirPlay from an iPhone, which we cover in our iPhone and iPad guide.
The three IPTV apps for Apple TV compared
| App | Price | Xtream | M3U | EPG grid | Catch-up | VOD/series | Multi-audio/subtitles | Shared license with iOS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IPTV Smarters (Smarters Player) | Free | Yes | Yes | Per-channel | Yes | Excellent | Yes | Yes |
| iPlayTV | One-time purchase | Yes | Yes | Full grid | Yes | Good | Yes | Yes |
| GSE Smart IPTV | Free / Pro in-app | Yes | Yes | Grid (XMLTV) | Limited | Basic | Excellent | Yes |
IPTV Smarters on tvOS
The tvOS build of Smarters mirrors the Android and iOS versions: log in with Xtream credentials and you get Live TV, Movies, Series and Catch-up as separate sections, with poster art for the 80,000+ VOD titles. The guide is shown per channel rather than as a grid, which is the main compromise. It is free and the easiest starting point.
iPlayTV on tvOS
iPlayTV is built natively for tvOS and it shows: the Siri Remote swipe gestures map to the guide, the full EPG grid scrolls smoothly, channel switching is quick, and catch-up entries appear directly in the guide. The app is a one-time purchase that also unlocks the iPhone and iPad versions. It is our recommendation for live TV and sport on Apple TV.
GSE Smart IPTV on tvOS
GSE is the most flexible: it handles Xtream, M3U, and an external XMLTV EPG URL, and its audio-track and subtitle selection is the best of the three, which matters for multi-language channels from our 60+ countries. The interface is denser and less remote-friendly than iPlayTV, and catch-up support is limited.
How to set up IPTV on Apple TV
The steps use IPTV Smarters; iPlayTV and GSE differ only in labels. Full screenshots are on our iOS and Apple TV install guide.
- On the Apple TV home screen, open the App Store and search for IPTV Smarters, iPlayTV or GSE Smart IPTV. Select Get (or the price) and install.
- Open the app. Choose Login with Xtream Codes API (in iPlayTV: Add Playlist > Xtream Codes; in GSE: Remote Playlists > Add Xtream).
- Enter a name, then the server URL, username and password from your WorldIPTV activation email. Typing on the Siri Remote is slow, so use the iPhone keyboard prompt that appears on your phone, or the Apple TV Remote app.
- If your app or plan uses M3U instead, choose Add M3U and paste the M3U URL from your playlists page, then add the EPG URL in the EPG field.
- Confirm and wait 30–60 seconds while the channel list and guide download.
- Open Live TV, choose a country group, and select a channel. Swipe down on the Siri Remote for the info panel with audio, subtitle and quality options.
- In the app settings, enable catch-up or archive if it is not already on, so channels with 7-day catch-up show a clock or rewind icon.
Getting the best picture and sound on Apple TV
- Match frame rate and dynamic range. Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content: turn on both Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate. Apple TV will switch to 50 Hz for European channels and 60 Hz for North American ones, which removes judder on sport.
- Use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. HD needs about 10 Mbps sustained; 4K needs 25 Mbps. The Apple TV 4K's Wi-Fi is good, but wired is better.
- Choose the right decoder. In Smarters, Settings > Player lets you switch between the native (AVPlayer) and alternative player if a stream stutters. Native usually performs best on tvOS.
- Set the audio output to your soundbar or receiver in Settings > Video and Audio if surround tracks are not being passed through.
- Add favorites in the app so you can jump between the ten channels you actually watch instead of scrolling the full list.
Apple TV versus other IPTV devices
Apple TV costs more than a Fire TV Stick and lacks the huge app choice of Android TV (no TiviMate, no XCIPTV), so it is not the cheapest IPTV box. It wins on build quality, remote, stability, long software support and the quality of its video output, particularly frame-rate matching. If you already own one, there is no reason to buy anything else. If you are choosing from scratch on a budget, our Android TV box vs Firestick comparison is the place to start.
All three apps work with every WorldIPTV plan on our pricing page, starting at $12 per month, with a 7-day money-back guarantee. Subscribers are responsible for complying with local laws; WorldIPTV distributes content under its own service terms.
