Sportsnet versus TSN is not an either-or choice for most Canadian hockey fans. For 2026-27, Sportsnet holds the national English games and the regional games for some clubs, TSN holds regional games for others, and Prime Video has the Wednesday nights. Which one you need depends on your team and where you live. Name your club and your region first, then match the service.
This page compares the services. It does not repeat the game-by-game setup steps already in the 2026-27 NHL season guide, and it does not copy prices that change during the season. Check every price with the rights holder before you pay.
The short answer
- If you follow the Leafs, Oilers, Flames or Canucks, Sportsnet is the likely home of most of your regional games, according to Sportsnet+'s own plan page. Confirm your region there.
- If you follow the Canadiens, Senators, Jets or, for some games, the Leafs, TSN carries regional games, according to TSN's own listings. Confirm your region there.
- If you want every national English game, you need Sportsnet, plus Prime Video for Wednesdays.
- If you follow a club from outside its region, you need an out-of-market option. Sportsnet+ Premium is the plan Sportsnet describes for that.
- Add up what you actually watch before you subscribe to both.
What each service carries for 2026-27 hockey
| Question | Sportsnet / Sportsnet+ | TSN | Prime Video |
|---|---|---|---|
| National English games | Yes: Saturday Night Hockey on Sportsnet from 3 October; Monday Night Hockey on Sportsnet+ only, from 5 October | Not described as national English games in the sources used here | No |
| Wednesday games | No: Sportsnet says Wednesday games are not broadcast by Sportsnet on any platform | No | Yes, exclusive, in English and French |
| Regional games | Sportsnet+ lists Leafs, Oilers, Flames and Canucks games, depending on regional restrictions | Leafs, Canadiens, Senators and Jets games, subject to blackouts | No |
| Out-of-market games | Sportsnet+ Premium | Not offered, according to the guides used here | No |
| Playoffs | All Stanley Cup Playoffs, except three early-round series on Prime Video | Not covered here | Three early-round series a year |
Sources for the table are the Rogers Sports and Media release of 8 September 2026, Sportsnet+ support and plan pages, and the TSN and Sportsnet+ listings as read on 30 September 2026. Where a fact comes from a secondary guide rather than a rights holder, it is labelled below.
How Monday, Saturday and Wednesday split
Sportsnet's release lays out the national schedule:
- Saturday Night Hockey premieres on Sportsnet on 3 October, with at least one Canadian team in each matchup.
- Monday Night Hockey returns on 5 October and, new this season, streams exclusively on Sportsnet+. Sportsnet and Rogers say TV subscribers can add it through their TV-provider login for $12.99 CAD a month: an add-on package for TV subscribers, which requires that Sportsnet is already in the customer's TV package (the add-on went on sale on 15 September). Rogers, Rogers West and Shaw Direct customers with Sportsnet in their package get this content as part of their package, according to Sportsnet+ support. On Shaw Direct, Sportsnet+ is included only until 30 June 2027, according to the Sportsnet+ eligibility FAQ.
- Wednesday Night Hockey is on Prime Video only, in English and French. It is not on Sportsnet.
If your only question is "where is tonight's game?", Sportsnet+ has an NHL Game Finder tool that lists where each matchup is shown. Use the rights holder's own tool, not a forum post.
Sportsnet+ Standard vs Premium
Sportsnet+ sells two hockey tiers. Standard covers the national games plus regional games for the Leafs, Oilers, Flames or Canucks where you live. Premium adds out-of-market games and, per Sportsnet, a choice between home and away broadcast feeds. Neither plan removes a blackout for a game that another broadcaster owns in your region: a Leafs game shown on TSN inside Leafs territory still needs TSN, according to a secondary guide (Squawka, read 30 September 2026). Prices and plan names can change during the season, so read them on the Sportsnet+ pricing page the day you sign up.
TSN's side of the ledger
TSN lists regional NHL games for the Canadiens, Leafs, Senators and Jets, and says those games are blacked out outside the club's region. TSN has changed its subscription options recently and reports disagree on what is still sold to new customers, so open TSN's own subscribe page for current plans and prices. Avoid paying twice
A simple checklist before you add a second service:
- Write your list. Name your club, your city and your province.
- Check the region. Regional games only appear if you live in that club's region. Moving a login between provinces does not change that.
- Count games, not channels. A service with the channel you want is not useful if your club's games sit elsewhere that night.
- Check the calendar. If your main games are on Sportsnet through October and TSN through November, a monthly plan can be started and stopped instead of held all year.
- Check times in your zone. Opening night was announced at 7 p.m. ET for Canadiens at Maple Leafs and 10 p.m. ET for Canucks at Oilers, which is 4 p.m. PT and 7 p.m. PT. Set your guide to your own time zone.
- Read the terms. Look for contract length, cancellation and device limits before you enter a payment card.
Where IPTV fits, and where it does not
A licensed IPTV service can put Sportsnet, TSN and other Canadian channels in one guide on one login. That is a convenience, not a workaround. It does not change which games are in your region, and it does not remove a blackout. If a game is not offered where you live, no login will change that. Use only services authorized to carry these channels in Canada, and be cautious with any provider that will not say where its rights come from. Subscribers are responsible for complying with local laws; WorldIPTV distributes content under its own service terms.
If you want to see how the channels look in a guide before you decide, the 24-hour free trial shows whether Sportsnet and TSN brands appear and whether the picture holds on your Wi-Fi. Plan prices in Canadian dollars are on the pricing page and the Canada page. For the wider cable comparison, start with IPTV vs cable vs streaming, which uses U.S. examples for the method.
